the science of sound

Every sound is born out of silence, dies back into silence, and during its life span is surrounded by silence. Silence enables the sound to be. It is an intrinsic but unmanifested part of every sound, every musical note, every song, and every word. The unmanifested is present in this world as silence. All you have to do is pay attention to it.
–Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now
Welcome to Sädé Guided Journey’s page on the science of sound. This topic takes us from the cosmic symphonies of planets to the enchanting resonance of singing bowls, revealing the profound influence of sound on the universe and our individual well-being. Below are links to researchers, studies, and demonstrations offering empirical evidence that listening to sound does indeed heal.
John Stuart Reid: Discovering the Beauty of Cymatics
Enter the mesmerizing world of cymatics (the study of visible sound) with English acoustical engineer John Stuart Reid. Since 1999, he has dedicated himself to the study of cymatics. He has even unveiled resonances hidden within the Great Pyramid’s sarcophagus in Egypt. Through pioneering techniques, John adds an awe-inspiring dimension to our understanding of sound and its ability to shape matter. Visit his website here.
Music and Brain Research Team
Led by Dr. Peter Schneider, “Music and Brain” is a transdisciplinary research group involving researchers from Switzerland and Germany at the Centre for Systematic Musicology in Graz, Austria. The team’s research interests include:

Dr. Glen Rein earned his PhD in Bio(neuro)chemistry from the University of London in 1983. Subsequently, in 1984, he assumed a professorship at Mt. Sinai Hospital, delving into the realm of bioelectromagnetics. Progressing from there, his exploration led him to Stanford University Medical Center in 1987, where he focused on the study of psychoneuroimmunology. Dr. Rein currently serves as the director of the Quantum Biology Research Lab at Stanford, where his work suggests that the application of external quantum fields can elicit biological effects on a cellular level.
In 1988, when he tested the impact of different music on human DNA, he made a discovery that confirmed the understanding of numerous ancient spiritual traditions: Sound energy has a biomechanical effect on the body.
Building on his findings, further research has shown that Solfeggio frequencies have profound mental, emotional, and physical effects. Additionally, this understanding has led to the establishment of music therapy as a health profession offering therapeutic treatment to individuals using various aspects of music creation and listening.
Dr. Bruce Lipton is a former professor of medicine at Stanford University and bestselling author of The Biology of Belief. This video is a conversation with Dr. Lipton about sound healing. As a biologist, speaker, and author, he talks about his understanding of energy, sound, and vibrational healing. He discusses how and why sound works, and ways it can reduce stress and pain and restore harmony to mind and body.
To learn more about Dr. Lipton’s work, you can also read the edited transcript of an interview he conducted with Integrative Medicine: A Clinician’s Journal (IMCJ), published as “The Jump from Cell Culture to Consciousness.”
Jonathan Goldman is a writer, musician, and teacher. He is an authority on sound healing and a pioneer in the field of harmonics, and has written many bestselling books on this topic, including Healing Sounds: The Power of Harmonics (Inner Traditions, 1992), The 7 Secrets of Sound Healing (Hay House, 2008); The Divine Name: The Sound That Can Change the World (Hay House, 2010), winner of the 2011 Visionary Award for “Best Healing Book”; and his latest book, The Humming Effect: Sound Healing for Health and Happiness (Healing Arts Press, 2017). Learn more about Goldman’s work at his website.
Esteemed figures such as Eckhart Tolle, Mitchell Gaynor, Gregg Braden, and Joe Dispenza have explored the power of sound and meditation in promoting healing and self-empowerment. Their insights and research demonstrate the potential for sound to enhance our understanding of the unified field and the interconnectedness of all life, encouraging a harmonious coexistence with our universe.

The NeuroCatch® Platform is an industry-leading medical device that offers an objective evaluation of cognitive function, delivered in minutes at the point of care. Perhaps one day this device can be used to demonstrate how sound helps improve sleep, relaxes the brain and nervous system, and calms the heart.
Effects of Singing Bowl Sound Meditation on Mood, Tension, and Well-Being
Here is one of many studies that demonstrate the possibilities of sound’s impact on our physical and emotional health. Published in 2017 in the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary Alternative Medicine, it examines the effects of Tibetan singing bowl meditation on mood, anxiety, pain, and spiritual well-being in sixty-two women and men.
